Independent Ear, Joins forces with ILS (UMG/Caroline)

Independent Ear is pleased to announce their new alliance with Independent Label Services Group (ILS). ILS, a subsidiary/partner of Universal Music Group & Caroline Distribution, has been working with many artists and labels all over the world such as Brian McKnight & Culvert Music. "Today is a day that has been many years in the making for Independent Ear." says Independent Ear Founder and CEO Phillip Ryan Block.

With many new releases in the coming years this relationship will prove to be a great one. Staff and artists alike are buzzing with excitement about this new alliance. "It's rare that I've seen a company especially one at the level of ILS that share many of the same values that Independent Ear does. I am proud be part of the ILS Group UMG/Caroline. We’re excited to have them as part of our growing team." says Independent Ear CEO.

Independent Ear, originally known as Independent Ear Productions was formed in 2011 with the knowledge of the following; many artists/ bands go their entire lives without getting the recognition they deserve & the music industry is intrinsically flawed. CEO and Founder Phillip Ryan Block saw a need for a label unlike any other in the industry and build the values on that - something different and something inclusive. As of April 2014 became incorporated as Independent Ear, Inc. Independent Ear, Inc has released music from artists artists such as Nick Urb, Retro Youth, and Rabid Young.

New Haven’s Glamour Assassins Teams Up With Indie Label Independent Ear.

This week New Haven, CT based Indie Rock band Glamour Assassins inks a new deal with burgeoning midwest based label & music company Independent Ear.

Coming off the heels of the release of their debut release “Ain’t So Young,” the indie rockers were looking for a partner that would help take their career to the next level, and they found that partner in Independent Ear.

Their album was released back in August via digital music portals, and this coming Friday, the 25th of September, their album will be available for physical pre-order as well as digitally through Independent Ear’s website. IE is home to artists such as James Rawson, London has Fallen, and Impending Lies, so Glamour Assassins will be in good company.

“We were completely impressed with Glamour Assassins from the time we first heard their music, and we look forward to developing them into one of the top of the bands in indie rock today ” - Phillip Ryan Block Founder & President of Independent Ear Records.

Importance of Independent Music

Take a moment and imagine ... what would your world be like, if music never existed? How about if all music disappeared tomorrow?

I was recently asked to write about my thoughts. I was to write about the importance of independent music. This led my mind to many different things.

In truth, independent music is a difficult thing to pinpoint. It means a lot of different things, depending on who you ask.

Music, at the heart of it, is about expression. When you see a ukulele on a street corner, or a bagpiper playing in the fields. These people are expressing something in a way that may come easier to them than words. And just like with books, not every person will like what you have to say.

Independent music has the ability to break free from rules. Rules about what instruments you can use, or what material you can sing about. I know musicians who walked out on rich record labels. They were being told what they could and could not sing about.

Miles Davis. Thelonious Monk. Frank Zappa. Elvis Presley. The Beatles. These are just some of the musicians who have challenged what music should be. And we should thank them for that.

You and I may not agree on who the better artist is. Though where would music be, if these people were never given a chance?

Some of the most amazing music ever accomplished was with unusual pairings. Jazz has been home to some of the most beautiful, and some of the most bizarre riffs I have ever heard. Aggro1 had a mashup between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Gorillaz. And how about mongolian throat singing paired with a banjo?

There are people that believe these groups should have never met. Yet if you look up "ah sho dekio," by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, I challenge you not to tap your feet!

Independent music is a lot of things, because it CAN be. And we need to make sure that it stays that way. We need to make sure that there is a platform for the unusual. Without the independent musicians,  the music scene would be one-dimensional. The music world often overlooks the effect that independents can have on it.

This is why there needs to be the independent. To remind not just the music world, but the world at large: there are more options out there.
