INDEPENDENT EAR JOINS NONPROFIT - NOTES TO THE SOUL

Independent Ear has reorganized to be one of the few Non-Profit Record Labels in the World!

(Product :: Career Development & Product Development)

(Product :: Career Development & Product Development)

New York, NY -- Notes to the Soul, nonprofit, acquired Independent Ear, record label, currently valued at $1.1M, via a unanimous donation by all Independent Ear shareholders in December. This acquisition marks a consolidation that combines strengths of a traditional label with a nonprofit to guarantee high quality and high impact services to musicians.

“We go to school to learn a skill; however, we are not taught to make a career or business of that skill. Independent Ear’s merger with Notes to the Soul is addressing that issue in general and creating a strategy that will revolutionize how we support music careers,” says Ryan Block, General Manager.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 36% of musicians are self-employed. Music career development has become more and more important. Independent Ear is working on that challenge and is pulling together top music industry professionals to help. This business model and Notes to the Soul’s career development program help the music community and the roster of artists to define their brands, tell their stories, expand their available revenue streams and to maintain healthy work/life balance.

IE is tightening the relationships between the artists & their support team, which adds a much-needed layer of accountability in an industry that notoriously lacks it. By putting the interest of the artist & community first, there’s an opportunity to create an integral balance between artists needs and financial sustainability. Independent Ear’s move transforms the mission of the organization to truly push for artist financial freedom and equality of rights within the business of music - as never before seen.

Independent Ear (IE) is a full-service music label/publishing house dedicated to disrupting the status quo inside of the music industry, through an artist-driven model, providing traditional music label services in conjunction with non-traditional methods of marketing.

Notes to The Soul (NTTS) is dedicated to inspiring positive social change through sustainable music education and empowerment programs to benefit the socio-economic and musically disenfranchised.

Importance of Independent Music

Take a moment and imagine ... what would your world be like, if music never existed? How about if all music disappeared tomorrow?

I was recently asked to write about my thoughts. I was to write about the importance of independent music. This led my mind to many different things.

In truth, independent music is a difficult thing to pinpoint. It means a lot of different things, depending on who you ask.

Music, at the heart of it, is about expression. When you see a ukulele on a street corner, or a bagpiper playing in the fields. These people are expressing something in a way that may come easier to them than words. And just like with books, not every person will like what you have to say.

Independent music has the ability to break free from rules. Rules about what instruments you can use, or what material you can sing about. I know musicians who walked out on rich record labels. They were being told what they could and could not sing about.

Miles Davis. Thelonious Monk. Frank Zappa. Elvis Presley. The Beatles. These are just some of the musicians who have challenged what music should be. And we should thank them for that.

You and I may not agree on who the better artist is. Though where would music be, if these people were never given a chance?

Some of the most amazing music ever accomplished was with unusual pairings. Jazz has been home to some of the most beautiful, and some of the most bizarre riffs I have ever heard. Aggro1 had a mashup between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Gorillaz. And how about mongolian throat singing paired with a banjo?

There are people that believe these groups should have never met. Yet if you look up "ah sho dekio," by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, I challenge you not to tap your feet!

Independent music is a lot of things, because it CAN be. And we need to make sure that it stays that way. We need to make sure that there is a platform for the unusual. Without the independent musicians,  the music scene would be one-dimensional. The music world often overlooks the effect that independents can have on it.

This is why there needs to be the independent. To remind not just the music world, but the world at large: there are more options out there.

An Idiot Proof Way to Find Your Band's Perfect Demographic | James Rawson - Guest Blog

I believe in the musictrepreneur: treating your music as a small business. And I know, you probably just cringed a little. Mixing business and music sounds so icky. But trust me it’s not. In fact, it will transform your music because sound business theories and practices are completely different than any other type of theories and practices.
